Scary tourist attractions in Edinburgh

"The Edinburgh Dungeon" in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a unique and award-winning tourist attraction that takes visitors on a chillingly fun journey through the darkest chapters of Scottish history. This underground experience, opened in 2000 by the Merlin Entertainments Group, combines theatrical performances, interactive rides, and impressive special effects to bring 1000 years of Scottish history to life in an entertaining way. With a mix of scares, humor, and historical facts, the attraction is aimed at brave souls around eight years old and offers an immersive experience that is both educational and thrilling.

Interactive history experiences in Scotland

The centerpiece of the Edinburgh Dungeon is the approximately 70-minute tours, where professional actors guide visitors through carefully designed sets. These sets are 360-degree productions equipped with moving floors, rotating walls, air blasts, and other effects to make the scenes come alive. The actors portray infamous figures from Scottish history, including the freedom fighter William Wallace, the notorious body snatchers Burke and Hare, the alleged witch Agnes Finnie, or the cannibal clan leader Sawney Bean. Each show is interactive - guests are often directly addressed, involved in the action, or even "accused," leading to laughs and moments of fright. The dark humor, a hallmark of the Dungeon brand, runs through the entire experience, making even the most gruesome stories bearable.

Family-friendly activities in Edinburgh

Highlights include various thematic scenes depicting real historical events or legends. Visitors can wander through the plague-ridden alleys of the Middle Ages, where the "Foul Clenger" wreaks havoc, or stand before the stern "Judge" in the courtroom and plead for mercy. The "Witch Hunt" show sheds light on the witch trials of the 17th century, while the "Cannibal Cave" tells the chilling legend of Sawney Bean, who allegedly devoured over 1000 people in a cave with his family. A special thrill is the "Drop Ride to Doom," a free-fall ride staged as a public execution that spectacularly concludes the tour. This ride provides an adrenaline rush and completes the experience with a final scare.

Historical tours in Edinburgh Dungeon

The stories at the Edinburgh Dungeon are based on real events or passed-down myths, omitting boring details to maximize suspense. For example, the grim time of the plague with its horrors and chaos of the narrow "Closes" of the Old Town is depicted, while Burke and Hare are known for their murders in the 19th century when they sold bodies to anatomists. The attraction was extensively expanded in 2016, adding new show areas to make the experience even more diverse. The actors, many with professional training, impress with their energy, improvisational skills, and ability to draw visitors into the narrative.

Horror tours for adults in Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Dungeon is centrally located in the city and easily accessible, making it an ideal stop for tourists looking to discover Edinburgh's darker side. For families with older children or groups seeking some variety from traditional sightseeing, it is a perfect addition. There is also a small souvenir shop where thematically appropriate mementos like books or creepy souvenirs can be purchased. The attraction is designed to remain a rewarding destination even in rainy weather, as everything takes place indoors. Access for people with limited mobility is largely provided, with the free-fall ride being optional and able to accommodate physical restrictions.

The atmosphere is heightened by the combination of dim lighting, sounds, and smells - such as the stench of the plague alleys - engaging the senses and perfecting the illusion of a leap into the past. Special events such as "Dungeon Lates", held in the evenings for adults without children, are also popular and offer an even more intense experience. The Edinburgh Dungeon is part of a European chain operating similar attractions in cities like London, Amsterdam, or York, but the Scottish version stands out for its focus on local history and characters.

Entry tickets are Worth the money, but they ask 25 pounds in the end if you want to print the pictures that they’ve taken of you (3) that’s definitely overpriced

A moderately scary experience. Definitely not for small children! They should perhaps police this better since a scared & upset child with someone else did affect our visit. Expensive, but all the actors did a great job. A fun way to learn about Edinburgh & history for older children.

A really fantastic experience. I’m writing this on behalf of my partner whom purchased a ticket. He had a fabulous time and really enjoyed himself. He said the staff were very attentive and catered to his needs. Highly recommended to book in advance as you save a bit of money. Highly recommended.

Great visit, entertaining and interesting. The staff were engaged and entertaining. Staff in the gift shop were helpful and patient. We had an 11 year old with us, who was overwhelmed, particularly with the Sawney Bean cave. It's worth considering whether it is too much for younger children. The guide book at £2.50 was worth it in my view, gave some background to the stories being told. Edinburgh certainly has a gruesome history, as will most ancient settlements.

My partner and I visited on Valentines day. We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience from start to finish. The actors are fantastic, and the sets are amazing. I was mesmerised by the witch, I thought the whole set up was fantastic. The cannibals made my skin crawl, superb actors that made the experience fully immersive. Will definitely visit again and bring our teenagers with us next time just to watch their reactions!

A few jumps and surprises along the way, all good fun. Some of the characters were so fast speaking that I couldn't understand what they were saying, but other than that a good couple of hours of laughs.
